The Gift Before Christmas

My wife is the best.  She ordered an Advent calendar from Flaviar.  It contains a nice Glencairn dram glass and 24 whiskeys.  All tasting will be neat, without water, room temperature and then hand warmed to detect aromas.  I am a novice in describing what I taste.  I only know what I like and don't.

The packaging is heavy weight cardboard printed with the "Galaxy of Whiskeys".  The booklet inside is a great reference to review after the first couple of sips.  I will write my reviews before reading the notes, so what I taste will differ slightly.

#flaviar, #whiskey, #advent

Dec 1st - Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch Bourbon.  Lots of caramel and a nice alcohol burn.  The linger was a bit too short, but a lovely sipping whiskey.

Dec 2nd - Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye Distiller's Edition.
This one lags behind the previous day.  The marmalade comes through strong, but the linger leaves a bit of an unpleasant flavor on the tongue and throat.

Dec 3rd - Milk & Honey Elements Peated. Israeli Single Malt
The peat hits the nose immediately.  Peat stays on the tongue and throat for a nice long linger.  This one has a very nice floral mid-mouth flavor.

Dec 4th - Starward Two Fold Australian Double Grain Whiskey
After the last whiskey (peated), there is very little nose to this one.  With that said, the flavor is outstanding.  This might not scare off a novice due to the low nose.  I get hints of chocolate or dark fruit, the linger is rather short, but satisfying.  After a few more pulls, the linger lasted longer and the fruit really came forward.

Dec 5th - Noble Oak Double Oak Bourbon
A strong sweet flavor at mid-tongue, maybe a touch of cinnamon, a little alcohol burn (90 proof), the linger is smooth and vanilla.  This is another whiskey that would not scare off a person new to whiskeys.

Dec 6th - Penelope Bourbon - Darrel Strength
There was little to no nose from this bourbon.  The on-the-tongue reaction was very little.  There is a late fruit linger, but very little to discuss.  It could be sipped neat by novices.  I had to finish the night on a more robust whiskey.

Dec 7th - Omar - Sherry Cask Single Malt
This has a first hit of vanilla, followed by a longer sherry linger.  The nose has orange or jam, no smoke.

Dec 8th - Frey Ranch - Straight Bourbon Whiskey
First on the nose is sweetness.  The mid-tongue has a medium weight bright red, not black, cherry flavor.  The linger has more sweetness, brown sugar and vanilla.  After several pulls, the nose brings more vanilla.

Dec 9th - WhistlePig - PiggyBack Rye
The first nose detects caramel.  Mid-tongue is sweet with a dark cherry hint.  Linger has hints of pine and vanilla.  At nearly 100 proof, it packs a punch of spiciness.

Dec 10th - Limavady - Single Malt Whiskey
The nose was a little off putting.  There was something that was not quite right.  However, the mouth was really quite good.  This is an easy sip, but nothing really exceptional.

Dec 11th - Rabbit Hole - Heigold Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
The nose has a bit of citrus, but it is faint.  There is a mild sweetness to the mouth, the throat has a nice burn (47.5% ABV).  The linger has a slight oak or bark-like essence.

Dec 12th - The GlenAllachie - 15 Year Old Scotch Single Malt
The nose is light.  Not a lot of peat or smoke on here, maybe a little caramel.  Wow!  The mouth is dried fruit and nuts.  The linger stays around for quite a while, leaving the dried fruit sitting there.

Dec 13th - Balcones - Texas Single Malt Whisky
Ah, after the last few, this one has a full whisky nose.  I get hints of cardamom, a little smoke, and some spice on the nose.  Initially it packs quite an alcohol hit (53%), followed by pepper spice and mild sweetness with no mineral saltiness.

Dec 14th - Mars Shinshu - Iwai Tradition
Even hand-warmed, this whisky does not have a lot of nose.  I find a faint grain scent to the nose.  The mouth is warm, a slight sweetness, caramel, and fruit.  The linger is toasted and

Dec 15th - Stellum Spirits - Stellum Bourbon 57.49%
Right from the first nose, this is going to be a potent bourbon.  I am not sophisticated enough to pick out any particular scents, just straight whiskey.  The mouth is strong and spicy with slight hints of pepper.  The linger burns long and hot to the back of the throat with a slight woody linger.

Dec 16th - The Sexton - Irish Single Malt (40%)
the nose has a chalk like odor, not unpleasant, but it was an interesting aroma.  The mouth feels of dried peach.  The linger keeps the peach going.  This is a light and easy to drink whiskey.

Dec 17th - Rogue Spirits - Dead Guy Whiskey 40%
The nose is full of gain and malt.  The mouth is full of similar flavors with a small amount of sweetness.  The linger is full of gain and malt notes.
Dec 18th - Benromach - 10 year old Scotch
The nose has hints of fruit, peat, and smoke.  The mouth is spicy with a heavy peat hot with a bit of smoke.  The linger reminds me of the linger from a strong mint, not minty, just a nice vaporous linger.
Dec 19th - Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye Whiskey
The nose has the dark, well-melted, bouquet of caramel and Bar BQ spice. No smoke on the nose.  The immediate impact of the cask strength alcohol boots the tongue with spice and pepper. The linger is a bit short, but pleasant with flavors of more caramel.  I will buy this rye in the future.

Dec 20th - George Remus Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Not an outstanding bourbon.  It is very smooth and easy to drink bourbon. Linger was very short and left vanilla on the tongue.

Dec 21st - Stranahan's Sherry Cask Single Malt
Heavily influenced by the sherry cask, the nose and tongue were loaded with cherry and apples.  The linger left a buttery and nutty flavor that lasted a long time.

Dec 22nd - Bushmills 10 year old Single Malt Irish Whiskey
Pure Irish whiskey.  Smooth with slight hints of honey and mint.

Dec 23rd - Locke + Co Aspen Aged Rye
A soft and easy rye.  A bit of spice on the tongue and some mineral.  Linger left notes of caramel and vanilla.
Dec 24th - Ardnamurchan AD/03.21:02 Scotch single malt
This one had a nice peat on the nose and tongue.  Linger included caramel notes and fruit.
